What actually happened
Mr Earnest Leaven the Baker
was of yeoman stock with his older brother Frederick still running the family
farm. His wife’s and his own interests going that way, he took over the Bakery
in Ploughstead long ago. They had three daughters Bettina, Beatrice and Bunny
but his wife died young of typhoid. The three daughters spent a lot of time at
their uncle’s farm and the elder two married well to another farmer and to a
Norwich undertaker. Thus it was with horror that Earnest found that Bunny was
having an affair with the honourable Jasper Coulter. Unfortunately this became
known in the village resulting in unsavoury jibes. Her two sisters were pretty
appalled suggesting that Bunny be sent away! Agate Primfield said that due to
her reputation Bunny could no longer take part in the seasonal harvests but Mr
Jasper found her a job as a chambermaid in Norwich. Later Earnest had word that
she was now a streetwalker there. He went there to visit her and found that
several other girls from the village had wound up the same way. More had come to
Ploughstead as temporary workers. At that time Bunny was resigned to her fate
and realised that she could not return home. Earnest brooded on the evil ways of
Jasper Coulter and knew that there others of a like mind. However he knew that
they, awed by Jasper’s position as a gentleman were unlikely to ever move
against him. Then he received a letter from Bunny saying that her employer’s had
sent her to the Jolly Jack Brothel in Great Yarmouth where she was little better
than a prisoner! Instead of the rich businessmen of Norwich her customers were
rough seamen! Feeling helpless to provide any remedy he decided to take revenge
on Mr Jasper. From Bunny he knew that Jasper would lure his victims to the
Darbeyfield Barn most notably on the night of the Harvest dances. He had given
Bunny a key which Earnest now had. Most of his victims had one of these keys!
From Bunny he knew that Jasper usually made his assignations for ten-thirty on
the night of the dance, knowing that it would not finish for another hour and a
half. He heard that Jasper had picked a new favourite Rowena Cowl and laid his
plans. He knew Rowena Cowl who was also of Yoeman stock. On the dark night of
the dance Earnest circled round via the Barn up the path to place a shielded oil
lamp against the stone shed beside Coulter house. He knew that Jasper would come
that way and passing in front of the lamp would give adequate warning. Rowena
Cowl would almost certainly come through the village directly from the dance and
he would hear her footsteps on the cobbles. Borrowing a fork from the barn, he
opened the northern most potato pit and made a hole large enough for the body.
He was just ensuring that no loose potatoes were lying around when he saw
someone block out the lamplight. Providentially Jasper was coming a little
early! Earnest slipped back into the barn via the big north door which he had
opened earlier. He had brought a rolling pin and a kitchen knife for the job but
decided that the potato fork would do better. Jasper unlocked the door and
entered and started towards the north door which he could see was open. Earnest
stunned him with a blow from the wood of the fork and then stabbed his chest
with it four times to make sure! Then he rolled the body onto one of the many
potato sacks and dragged it out to the potato pit. As he heaved it into the pit
he saw the damaged watch hanging from its chain. Twenty-seven minutes past ten
it said with the minute hand hammered into the face. ‘Why give away the time?’
thought Earnest, so he moved the hour forward to read twenty-seven minutes past
eleven. Later he wished he had made it later still but it was too late then. He
covered the body with the potatoes and the turves and tarpaulin, all the time
listening for the footsteps of Rowena. He went back into the barn roughly mopped
up the blood with a sack which he then put at the bottom of one of the piles.
Then he re-bolted the north door and left by the eats door locking it as he
left. It was now twenty to eleven and still there was no sign of Rowena. He ran
along the gardens at the back of Toft Row to minimise making too much noise. In
November there were no plants to be damaged. On entering St Judith’s Square he
slowed to a walk and after a few minutes glimpsed Rowena coming towards him. He
said her name and warned her against going to meet Mr Jasper. He told her that
his daughter had done so and was now walking the Streets of Great Yarmouth! He
said that if she persisted he would go and tell her aunt who lived in the school
building! At that Rowena thought the better of it and returned to the dance. He
circled back to collect his lamp and check over the burial scene. He went back
to his bakery and started the fire for the double batch of bread and cakes
needed for the seasonal workers in the morning. His assistants Geoge Comb and
his wife Angela returned about quarter past twelve and went to bed. Earnest
carried on with his baking. The other two would sell the produce in the morning.
He had hoped that the body would not be found for several days if not longer but
Zebedee Hanger was too observant! Had he set the watch later it could have been
any of the seasonal workers at the dance. As it was, suspicions fastened on Fay
Strangeholm and to Earnest’s surprise she was found guilty! He was rather sorry
for her but she was not a local and had a tarnished reputation besides. Now no
more girls could be led astray by the evil Mr Jasper.
