The treasure hunt

The inspiration for this game comes from "Scenarios for Wargames" by CS Grant published in 1981.  I have changed it around a bit and also taken some ideas from "Trouble on Treasure Island" in issue 5 of "Battlegames" magazine.

The Treasure Hunt

This inland area of the Soa Kin swamplands is the home of some rather odd people who make a living from fishing, hunting and collecting fruits.  They also occasionally sell some gems or other trinkets found in the swamp.  Recently though, there has been a significant increase in the number of these “finds” appearing for sale.  Some of these are quite exquisite and valuable.  The natives selling them say that they fell from the sky last winter and so did the sky carriage.

The low lying land here is boggy without being swampy.  However, the surface breaks easily and is virtually impassable to vehicles.  There are several hills and ridges that are dry but the tops are strewn with boulders and the occasional cave.  There are several woods and ponds in the area as well.  Almost at the centre is a small village.

Captain Wang Chi Las

Governor warlord Wai So Dim has been impressed by your troops and this has led to much favour coming your way.  With your now enhanced reputation you have had the pick of local ladies and delicacies.  Not only that you have had time to train your troops so that they are the equal of the German troops employed by the Warlord Lo Fat Soop.

The task now is to recover the highly valuable treasure in the remote Soa Kin Swamp.  The Warlord has spies in the area to guide you.  They will make themselves known to you only when you are within 4” of them.

Lo Fat Soop has troops under the command of your rival Hauptmann Michel Maas in the area as well. And you are to make sure that you recover the treasure not them.

Just as you arrive at the area your truck slips off the track and bogs in to its axles.   A man appears from the bush and says, “Seek the Lady by the Lone Pine and she will guide the way.”

Hauptmann Michel Maas

Warlord Lo Fat Soop has been impressed by your troops and this has led to much favour coming your way.  With your now enhanced reputation you have had the pick of local ladies and delicacies.  Not only that you have had time to train your mercenaries so that they are the equal of any troops in Morvalonesia.

Warlord Wai So Dim has troops under the command of your rival Captain Wen Chi Las in the area as well. And you are to make sure that you recover the treasure not them.

A man appears from the bush and says, “Seek the Lady by the Standing Stone and she will guide the way.”

The Writing The writing is really a crude diagram that shows a tall purple tree, a pond with a black cross beside it.  (Note - the purple tree is not placed until this clue is discovered.)

The Soa Kin swamp and the village.  The main features can be seen, the standing stone, the diamond shaped orchard, the dead tree but the pond and the purple tree, being obvious, are not yet placed.
(left) Hauptmann Michel Maas is met by a spy who guides him into the swamp.  Where an old lady tells him to seek the Old Man at the Dead Tree and he will guide your way.

(right) Captain Wang Chi Las meets another spy and leads him into the swamp. He finds an old lady who tells him to seek the Old Man at the centre of the Diamond Orchard and he will guide your way.

left - The Hauptmann splits his forces the small force to check out the Dead Tree while he leads his main force to the village.

right - The Captain also splits his forces taking the main force to the village and letting the smaller force head for the Diamond Orchard.  He regrets this when a bandit sentry opens fire.

left - more bandits appear and a fire-fight begins.

right - alerted by the shooting on the other side of the stream bandits engage the Hauptmann's forces crippling the old lady guide.

left - the Hauptmann charges the badits and routs them - but has he wasted too much time?  The scouts reach the Dead Tree and the old man tells them, "Seek the Writing on the Brown Buddha and it will guide your way."

right - the Captain searches the village but finds little of use.  He can see the battle raging beyond the village.  The smaller party reaches the orchard and meets the old man who tells them to "Seek the Writing on the Brown Buddha and it will guide your way."

Both parties drive off or kill the bandits but a a cost in casualties and time.
Both parties reach the temple with the Captain getting there first.  The Hauptmann engages in a fire fight but his superior firepower is much reduced when both the Bergmann's jam.  Casualties are taken on both sides including the Buddhist priest - wounded by a ricochet.
left - the Hauptmann regroups his wounded and shattered force.  All are wounded.

Right - meanwhile the Captain reaches the pool and discovers the red truck.  Santa's Sleigh!  Only now does it dawn on the players the significance of their names!

The Captain gains the treasure and drags it off.
