You are Sir Earnest Worrier Constable of Catena. This is the toll port on the Undomeel River, in Yent on the Moran border. The Undomeel River is the main supply route to Chogard city on the Nymph water lake down to the Deep water lake and the Western states beyond the Cleve. During the present war the tolls have been suspended but you are required to record the contents of all vessels seeking to pass Catena. You have a chain between the two towers, which can be raised to block the passage of vessels on the river. These are grim times becoming grimmer by the minute. During the night an elf lady called to say that the Lawic host was destroyed and the enemy were not far behind her! Naturally you suspect that this may be an exaggeration but certainly things look bad. Some refugees had arrived earlier and others have been seen heading South. Virtually all the men from Catena and the surrounding area have been drafted into the Lawic host. Your male garrison in fact had been reduced to three, Hopon the handicapped engineer, Sergeant Sympol and you over mature self! It was augmented by three Moran militia clubmen yesterday. They said they were cut off from the Lawic host three days ago! You have perforce organised some of the women in the port into a female militia so as to make some sort of a fight. Some are in the tall tower assisting Hopon with the heavy springalds and ready to throw hand stones. Others form your reserve behind Sergeants Sympol’s force at the gate. The mothers and children and other non-combatants are all in the base of the tall tower with all the food supplies. At need they can haul the river chain up. The customs tower across the river is locked and empty. You have with you your daughter Droplette, priestess of Artesia. You hope that troops fleeing from the battle may come seeking refuge. It is now dawn and you have everyone standing too. Your garrison comprises a mostly female 24 plus 15 non-combatants. May the Maghi protect you!
