Binky and the Hyena Trail (Part 1)

THE SLAVE MARKET - Player Briefings

Binky’s Briefing – It is 9.30 pm and moonrise is in about half an hour.

The wound to your left arm that you sustained at Sakati has healed leaving a long white scar.  Ramsden is his usual self and Henry Jones is none the worse for being shot though his aunt’s book now has a large soft lead ball embedded in it.  Your remaining Askari (now your Sergeant) is training new recruits in the rifle and working the machine gun.

The grateful Governor-General, Sir Trafalgar Erringe-Goodfellow, has given you full access to his hunting lodge in the south west of Morvalistan in the waTembi lands.  You are being looked after by Helen Damnayshin the missionary’s sister.  The missionary is away just now looking after the more far flung elements of the congregation.  The brother and sister are looking after the lodge until a new manager arrives.  The previous manager and his wife died of the fever a couple of weeks ago.

Gerald is still suffering from his wounds and near drowning but Hassan is making sure that he takes things easy.  His Askari NCO is training new recruits with your own men. Lucille left two weeks ago for the coast and home after receiving a letter saying that her father was ill.

Piet and Grunhilda are in fine health. He sent the others back to the steamer to take it to Mariba for servicing and repairs.  He has recruited a couple of local hunters to help in his search for the Mbilini.  He has been joined by Ratul Anroll a chap of somewhat obscure origins somewhere in the Balkan States though precisely which is a matter of conjecture.  He is, however, a great entertainer with a fine singing voice.

There are also a rather odd group of travellers there too.  One is an Irishman Dervel “Dodgy” O’Deal, a former Lieutenant in the Connaught Rangers (promoted from the ranks) who is honing his shooting skills and has been trying out a new telescopic sight produced by some dashed clever Swiss chappie.  His party piece to impress the ladies is to shoot the diamond from the ace in a pack of cards at 100 paces.  Or snip a rose from its stem at 50!

Sister Theresa Verde is there, a lady that Gerald and you recognise her as the nun Sister Marie Wannah that you rescued in an earlier adventure though she is now using a different name.  The Order of Santa Bianca, to which she says she is a humble servant, are dedicated to bringing relief to the sick, comfort to the grieving and support to the poor.  In this way they seek to spread the Word of God in their actions.  She speaks several local dialects.

Erwin Gemschotte, a Boer is a man of few words. He has explored and hunted throughout the continent.  He speaks seven tribal languages and Mogambu fluently.

What are you going to do about the slave traders?  You have a little time before the villagers assemble. Do you wait for them, call your askaris or take what you have and set off now?  Will you fight or attempt to buy the slaves? But you need to leave someone on guard over your expedition stores.

NOTE:  The Maria Theresa Thaler (Dollar) is the standard unofficial trade currency.  All are dated 1780 regardless of when or where they were minted.   Each coin is large and thick.  Each is worth about £4 Sterling or $20 US.  A porter load is about 500 in a strong box.

Herbalist

Takes a whole turn to prepare to heal “Wound”, 3 turns to heal “crippled to wounded” and 7 turns “Dead to crippled”.  Only one healing at crippled and dead is allowed for each character.  Though a dead character healed to crippled may have an attempt at being healed to wounded after d6+1 days.   Healing skills can heal one level on d10 roll of 6+, a score of 10 heals all wounds.   On a “dead” named character a roll of 7 & 8 heals to “crippled” and 9 or 10 means healed to “wounded”.

May make a maximum of two attempts per turn but must be on different figures.

Adds one to attempts on Morvalistani Natives.

Hero

Rolls two dice in combat or shooting and selects which he prefers.

Mighty strike

Once in any day he may invoke a “Mighty Strike”.  To do this he must declare it before a combat.  He them rolls his 2 dice, adds them together and takes the average, adds bonuses and finally ads another +3.  He fights the next round against that opponent at –3.

Great Juju

Around his neck he carried the sacred pouch of his ancestors.  While he wears it he may roll a failed shield parry once per day or he may heal himself from crippled or wounded as above, provided that this is possible – e.g. he my not make a heal attempt when swimming for his life or climbing a cliff etc.  He still needs the preparation time.  He may not, for fairly obvious reasons, heal himself from dead.

Gerald’s Briefing – It is 9.30 pm and moonrise is in about half an hour.

The injuries that you sustained in the river incident before Sakati have only partly healed leavingyou with a limp and a tendency to headaches. Hassan is his usual self and your Askari NCO and 2 askaris are training new recruits with your own men. Lucille left two weeks ago for the coast and home after receiving a letter saying that her father was ill.  However, Jolie Jaune, a student of Professor Incontinente’s, has arrived with a letter of introduction to study with you.  How is it that the Professor always seems to have the prettiest of students?

The grateful Governor-General, Sir Trafalgar Erringe-Goodfellow, has given you full access to his hunting lodge in the south west of Morvalistan in the waTembi lands.  You are being looked after by Helen Damnayshin the missionary’s sister.  The missionary is away just now looking after the more far flung elements of the congregation.  The brother and sister are looking after the lodge until a new manager arrives.  The previous manager and his wife died of the fever a couple of weeks ago.

Erwin Gemschotte, a Boer is a man of few words. He has explored and hunted throughout the continent.  He speaks seven tribal languages and Mogambu fluently.

Hassan the faithful Egyptian is classifying the finds though the strange Falcon statue still mystifies him.  He has noted a change in its “behaviour”.  Instead of facing the kingdom of the “White Queen” as it once did it now faces a little south of due east.

What are you going to do about the slave traders?  You have a little time before the villagers assemble. Jolie Jaune is a French girl of about 20.  She says that she is an orphan and has studied with Prof Incontinente for 3 years.  You vaguely remember her from the last time you all met up north.  She is fit and appears to have a strong constitution.  She speaks Mogambu, Dabris and has a good “book” knowledge of Morvalistan.  She has one of those new Mauser automatic pistols.

Special Skills

·         Healing skills can heal one level on d10 roll of 6+, a score of 10 heals all wounds.   On a “dead” named character a roll of 9 or 10 means healed to “wounded”. May make a maximum of two attempts per turn but must be on different figures.

·         Gerald is a tomb raider, historian and linguist of some repute.  He adds +2 to trap spotting, reading texts etc.  All the tomb raider stuff!

·         Hassan is an expert desert warrior as well as a man steeped in the lore of Ancient Egypt.  He reads hieroglyphics as is naturally as if they were his first language.  Sometimes you think that he was alive in the days of the pharaohs!

·         Jolie is a student with an excellent memory a young fit and adventurous lady.  She is armed with a Winchester carbine and is adept in its use, at least at targets.  She also carries a new Mauser automatic pistol that can fire very quickly.  She may fire 1 round for each quarter turn that she is stationary.  With her carbine she may “Blaze Away” firing 2d6 shots in one turn emptying her magazine.  Each shot is fired at -2 to hit.   It then takes a whole turn stationary to reload the magazine.

·         Askari Sergeant is a competent NCO who is respected by his men.  They add 1 to morale when he is with them. Bugle may send orders to other Askari units.  Orders include – advance, retire, fall in, meal call, officers’ call, reveille, lights out, action (left, right, front, rear).  Another 5 may be specified at the start of the expedition.

NOTE:  Ratul Anroll

He is a quiet man with a splendid voice.  He says that he was with a touring entertainment troupe of singers but quit them to explore Morvalistan.  He joined a caravan heading inland but it was ambushed by Gaasai warriors and he barely escaped them eventually stumbling upon this hunting lodge.  In actual fact he was thrown out of the troupe after his gambling debts and drunken, abusive behaviour towards the female lead soloists forced the owner to abandon him while he was drunk.  Left alone he was duped by some Arabs who carted him into the interior where he was to be sold into slavery.  Fortunately the Gaassai raiders attacked and in the confusion he escaped with just his life.  The experience has changed him for the better and he has found God.  Probably this is due to the attentions of Helen.  It would not be true to say that he has fallen in love with her but he certainly lusts after her.

Grunhilda Wurfmesser – an Austro-Hungarian adventuress, actress and confidence trickster.  She is hiding in Mariba because, it is rumoured, that she killed her lover.  She is now the mistress of Jager Todtenstill another Austro-Hungarian.  She works for Piet as his secretary and shares his fascination with Crypto zoology.  She is an expert knife thrower having been in a circus for a number of years, so she says.

NEW PLAYER!  Dervel’s Briefing – It is 9.30 pm and moonrise is in about half an hour.

You are an Irishman Dervel “Dodgy” O’Deal (aged 36), a former Lieutenant in the Connaught Rangers (promoted from the ranks).  You came into this area a few days ago and have spent a bit of time honing your shooting skills and you have been trying out a new telescopic sight produced by some dashed clever Swiss chappie.  Your party piece to impress the ladies is to shoot the diamond from the ace in a pack of cards at 100 paces.  Or snip a rose from its stem at 50!  The weapon you use for this is a light fowling piece that is really only any use for potting a duck!  You carry a heavy Adams revolver, a shotgun and a heavy bladed cutlass with a saw back.  In your luggage you have your light rifle, some cash 30 Silver Maria Theresas and 25 gold sovereigns.  The latter are sewn into your night coat lining.  You are entirely motivated by money – gold or diamonds are best!  You intend to make as much as you can so that you can buy your way into high society like all those bloody aristocrats.  You’ll show them!

Sister Theresa Verde a pretty young thing of about 25, has joined up with you, though you are quite certain that she is no nun!  She carries a light pistol strapped to her right thigh and a slim dagger on her left.  Not that you were spying on her quarters.  The Order of Santa Bianca, to which she says she is a humble servant, are dedicated to bringing relief to the sick, comfort to the grieving and support to the poor.  In this way they seek to spread the Word of God in their actions.  She speaks several local dialects.  She carries a comprehensive medical chest and another case that she keeps locked.  This is quite heavy and contains religious books.  In fact it has books on Morvalistan mythology and she is searching for her father  who disappeared searching for a lost city.

You have also made friends with Erwin Gemschotte, a Boer is a man about 26 years old of few words. He has explored and hunted throughout the continent.  He speaks seven tribal languages and Mogambu fluently.  He is a geologist (prospector really) searching for diamonds.  He fled the south when he was falsely accused of murdering his partner.  He intends to clear his name one day.  He is armed with a revolver, a Mauser rifle and a large hunting knife.  He has a pouch of 34 silver Maria Theresas and 16 golden sovereigns.

You are being looked after by Helen Damnayshin the missionary’s sister at the hunting lodge.  The missionary is away just now looking after the more far flung elements of the congregation.  The brother and sister are looking after the lodge until a new manager arrives.  The previous manager and his wife died of the fever a couple of weeks ago.

Two native hunters have thrown in their lot with you.  Haffa Choppa is an elephant hunter of some repute who favours native dress and carries a long elephant gun.  The other is Claude n’Qlet who favours western dress and red jackets.  He is a Christian but wears a necklace of lion’s claws and carries a repeating rifle.
